Lexie + Zach // Spring Mountain Wedding Along Payette Lake

Some weddings feel like a show you sit through. This one felt like a weekend you got to live inside. Lexie and Zach got married at Shore Lodge in McCall on a warm day in May. Payette Lake stretched out behind them, clear and cold. About a hundred of their people were there, close enough to touch. It was a big day, and it never once felt like a blur. That is the hard part to pull off at a wedding this size. It is the reason I want to walk you through theirs.

Lexie + Zach

Lexie and Zach went on their first date in 9th grade. Then they did not talk for about ten years. They found each other again, and they have been together ever since.

He proposed in New York in January. It was the end of a long trip that started with six days in Greece. Neither of them had been to either place.

They found me in a way I love. Lexie entered my spring engagement giveaway back in 2025 and won it. She told me later that she entered because she was shopping for a photographer. She wanted to see what she liked and what she did not.

Neither of them had been photographed before. Lexie said she did not want stiff, smile-at-the-camera photos. We did their engagement session at Hotel Renegade in downtown Boise first. You can see the engagement session here. Then they booked the wedding.

Pro tip: If you have never been photographed, book an engagement session before your wedding. It is the reason Lexie felt safe trying bold, creative photos on her wedding day. She had already done it once with me.

What the Day Looked Like

The first look was not with Zach. It was with her dad, Eric.

The bridesmaids blocked the barn doors and then slid them open. Eric turned and saw his daughter in her dress, and he went quiet. He got a little emotional, they hugged, and then something better happened. They just stood there and told stories until it was time to walk. Nobody rushed them, and that unhurried stretch is the part I remember most.

Lexie and Eric walked in together while I stood up front, right next to Zach. When he saw her come down the aisle, his whole face changed. Lexie teared up, too, as they said their vows. Pauline Downey kept the ceremony warm and simple, unplugged, with no phones in the air.

Then something shifted. We signed the license, gathered the family for photos, and headed out for portraits. That is where their nerves finally let go. She and Zach are playful with each other, and it showed. They were up for anything I threw at them. Out on the dock, I sat them at the very edge with their feet hanging over the water. Then we got creative. I caught a flipped reflection of them in the lake and shot their silhouettes against the sky. Later, I built a double exposure from the whole day. They were game for all of it.

Dinner moved up to the upper pavilion, and the toasts turned into a full comedy set. Person after person told stories about the two of them, and the whole room stayed loud with laughing. Then everyone moved back down for the dances, with Kyle from Cloud and Fire running the floor. Their first dance became a blurred, spinning frame that I still love. Lexie planned to wear her veil all night, but she ditched it to dance, which was the right call.

This is where their dog made his entrance. Lexie and Zach have a German shorthaired pointer named Dale and they made cutouts of her face for the dance floor. So Lexie danced, holding a cutout of her own dog, grinning. That single photo holds the whole personality of this wedding.

Around 9 pm we slipped back out for sunset. The sky went pink and purple, and the lake went to glass. We carried lanterns onto the dock and made some of the best frames of the night. With their guests watching from the dock, I pulled them into a couple of photos, which is one of my favorite things to do.

The night ended with sparklers, guests lined up on both sides, Lexie in a short white dress by then. The two of them walked through the light together.

5 Tips for Your Own Spring Wedding at Shore Lodge

  1. Hire two photographers. A Shore Lodge wedding spreads across the suite, two levels, and the dock. One photographer running between them will miss things. Two of us covered the boys and the girls at the same time, and we never lost the day.

  2. Protect your photo block. We had one hour for the license, family, wedding party, and couple photos. It held because we had a plan going in, not because we had extra time. Build that hour into your timeline and guard it.

  3. Plan for a long blue hour. The light on Payette Lake lasts after sunset longer than most people think. Do not pack up early. Some of the best photos came well after the sun was gone.

  4. Stay on-site. Lexie and Zach kept their whole crew at Shore Lodge. The night ran late, and nobody worried about driving home. It made the whole weekend easier.

  5. Plan for spring weather that swings. Late May in McCall can still bring snow and cold. This weekend was warm and clear the whole time. Hope for that, and keep a backup plan in case it turns.

Shore Lodge Spring Wedding FAQ

  1. Do you need two photographers for a Shore Lodge wedding? For a full wedding, I recommend it. The day spreads across the getting-ready suites, the lower and upper pavilions, and the dock. A second photographer means you get the boys and the girls at the same time. It also means better coverage when the day moves fast.

  2. Do you need a first look on your wedding day? No, and you have options. Lexie did not do a first look with Zach. She did one with her dad instead, and it became the most emotional moment of the day. A first look can also open up your timeline for photos. It is your call, and both ways work.

  3. How much time should you set aside for wedding photos at Shore Lodge? Plan for at least one focused hour after the ceremony. That covered the license signing, family, wedding party, and couple portraits for Lexie and Zach. Then save a short window at sunset for just the two of you. The light near the lake is worth it.

  4. Is 10 hours of coverage enough for a wedding at Shore Lodge? For most weddings here, yes. Ten hours covered Lexie and Zach from getting ready through the sparkler send-off. If you want early details and a late lake jump, you may want more. We talk through your timeline before we set the number.

  5. Should you do an engagement session before your wedding? If you have never been photographed, I say yes. Lexie and Zach did theirs at Hotel Renegade first. By the wedding, they were relaxed and up for creative photos. The session is how you learn to feel at ease in front of the camera.
